Some of the best and most iconic marketing campaigns mark a time in our history. Where were we when we saw iconic images or heard a snappy catchphrase will forever mark a place in time. Everyone has a favorite or one they consider the best. Defining what is the best is can be very difficult, as each will resonate differently with each of us. So, we thought it would be an adventure to take a stroll down memory lane and see what strikes a chord with you.

Some of the Best

Nike hit the mark on this campaign. It took advantage of the growing fitness craze and planted their flag in everyone’s mind just to go do it! You don’t have to be a professional athlete to enjoy and benefit from a Nike product. Where you run a marathon or walk a mile three times a week, Nike will get you moving.

Anheuser-Busch – “Whassup”

This ad took pop culture by storm and defined how we talked, asking the question “Whassup?” The phrase was popular across all cultural planes and appealed to multiple generations alike. Parents and grandparents could even be heard uttering the snappy catchphrase. It remains iconic to this day.

Dos Equis – The Most Interesting Man in the World

You know exactly who is! Manly, charming and sophisticated, smoking Cuban cigars and evoking the essence of James Bond. Across this campaign, the most interesting man in the world could be found setting the standard for cool, while reminding you no matter what you are doing, if you are drinking Dos Equis, you are cool!

Wendy’s – Where’s the Beef?

This one took the country by storm and added another catchphrase to our pop-culture vocabulary. With a tight-knit group of the cutest old ladies and one big empty hamburger bun, Wendy’s challenged the competition by asking the question, “Where’s the Beef?” This ignited an already hot burger war and brought Wendy’s to the forefront of the customer’s mind, challenging the quality and value of the competition.

Thoughts of a Classic

You can go back decades and find dozens of iconic and classic marketing campaigns that made a lasting impact on our culture and buying habits. The one thing that remains consistent across the classics is simplicity. They combined a simple, relatable image with text that resonated and remained in the minds of customers. It is really a simple formula, which as always, is so hard to achieve.

In today’s climate, a marketing campaign needs to be clean, simple, and relatable to the customer. It needs to create a message, both verbal and visual, which engages and presents solutions. The key is understanding your market and having an innovative vision of just how to speak to the customer.

Marketing campaigns are cultural influencers. Just look at the attention they get during the Super Bowl every year. Fans look forward to the lineup of new marketing campaigns that debut during the Super Bowl with almost the same enthusiasm as who is playing the game and who performs at half time. That speaks volumes!
